- John Sell Cotman (16 May – 24 July ) was an English marine and landscape painter, etcher, illustrator and author, and a leading member of the Norwich school of artists.

He showed a talent for art from an early age and would often go out on frequent drawing trips into the surrounding countryside. He worked in oil, watercolor, pencil and chalk, and 62 pins. The term 'Norwich School' refers to three generations of artists who lived and worked in Norwich during the 19th century.

Although they had no common aesthetic, these artists were united by the Norwich Society of Artists; this book examines to what extent their work could be said to constitute a movement. Landscape painting, also known as landscape art, is the depiction of landscapes in art—natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view—with its elements arranged into a coherent other works, landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work.
