An engine knock sensor is designed to detect these unplanned explosions and send a voltage signal to the ECU or powertrain control module. From there, the module will delay the ignition’s timing and prevent engine detonation.

Retarding (delaying) the ignition timing means the spark plugs fire a bit later than they used to. One of the goals was to discover a measurable knock intensity parameter which describes the propensity of knock to cause erosion damage.

An experimental technique was developed in which test specimens were subjected to controlled knocking conditions in the combustion chamber of a modified engine.

It dynamically resolves the knock intensity of an engine cycle within the same cycle. Experimental analyses show that both methods are able to detect knock occurrence in spark-ignition engines. In particular, the dynamic method can be a simple and reliable tool useful for setting knock-limited spark angle during engine development.

Engine knock arises from auto-ignition of the end gas ahead of the propagating flame. Fig. 2 presents the pressure trace, pressure oscillation, heat release rate (HRR) and unburned gas temperature (T) of a typical knocking case. The combustion process of the knocking case has two stages: flame propagation induced by spark ignition and end-gas auto-ignition causing pressure.

In this study, we developed a predictive model for knock intensity in spark-ignition (SI) engine with gasoline-ethanol-nbutanol (GEnB) blend fuel, which is being considered as an alternative fuel for conventional gasoline in South Korea, to understand the potential improvement of engine performance with the introduction of GEnB blend fuel.

With knock detection all set the ECU is half way to monitoring and preventing engine damage due to detonation. There is always a degree of background noise in the engine that we want to be able to filter out. This background noise will vary with engine RPM and engine load and it the task of the ‘knock threshold map’ to filter it out.

Diesel knock is the clanking, rattling sound emitted from a running diesel engine. This noise is caused by the compression of air in the cylinders and the ignition of the fuel as it is injected into the cylinder. This is much the same as a gasoline engine suffering from pre-ignition or spark.

This is the basis of the theory that knock can be detected solely from the engine’s torque output. When knock occurs, the sharp and instant peaks in cylinder pressure are counter productive and hence the overall torque output of the engine will drop, much like if we simply over advanced the ignition timing in an engine that was not knock limited.

The knock detection system starts with the sensors (microphones) that pick up engine noise and are mounted to the engine block. If the engine noise falls within the correct frequency and window of operation (around the time the spark plug fires), the ECU registers this as knock.
